KDA Development Grant For Hopeful JR/YR Candidates

Purpose: To provide financial and other Association support to the very best of our region’s young riders in their quest to compete at North American JR/YR Championships.

Amount: $5000

Qualifications:

  1. Affidavit from Applicant’s training professional that Applicant has the talent, dedication, and discipline required to get to JR/YR championships along with access to a suitable horse.
  2. Applicant to be a current member of KDA
  3. Applicant to be >14 yrs of age, but <21 yrs and still eligible for JR/YR
  4. Brief essay from the Applicant stating how they will use the Grant to include the following:  a. Why do you deserve it? b.  
What do you hope to achieve with the scholarship (include short and long term goals)? c. How can you personally 
“give back” to the KDA?
  5. Must be competing at 3rd level or above.
  6. Riders will submit a short video of themselves and the horse they will be competing (10 min. max) with their application (via DVD or 
YouTube).

OR if not currently working with a trainer:

  1. Successful audition/evaluation before a KDA member/professional trainer who will submit the required qualifications. Evaluation to be at the Applicant’s expense.
  2. The Applicant has suitable talent.
  3. The Applicant has access to a suitable horse.
  4. Applicant to be a current member of KDA.
  5. Applicant to be >14 yrs of age, but <21 yrs and still eligible for JR/YR.
  6. Brief essay from the Applicant stating how they will use the Grant to include the following: a. Why do you deserve it? b. 
What do you hope to achieve with the scholarship (include short and long term goals)? c. How can you personally

KDA YR/JR Development Grant Rules and Restrictions

  1. Applications must be received by KDA by September 1st of each year. Grant(s) will be awarded at the KDA Annual Dinner.
  2. Upon receipt of Grant, Grantee has the following two (2) calendar years to make use of funds.
  3. Grantee shall submit statements or receipts quarterly to the current President, Treasurer and Education Chair for allowable expenses to KDA for reimbursement.
  4. Grant funding may be used for any or all training, leasing, showing, and show related fees, and 
instruction. Grant money may not be used for board, feed, veterinary or farrier expenses or any other 
expense associated with the normal and typical costs and maintenance of keeping a horse.
  5. Funding will end in cases of long term injury to horse or rider or loss of horse indicated on the original 
application. Substitute mounts may be used with KDA approval.
  6. If training or showing are stopped due to the rider’s lack of interest in the JR/YR program, the grant 
money will cease. The termination of grant money will be determined by a KDA panel, and sent to the KDA Board for a final vote. The KDA panel will consist of the Education Chair, President and JR/YR representatives. *(panel members may be substituted at Board’s discretion)
  7. End of year summations with photos must be submitted to KDA for each of the two years.
  8. Grantee agrees to maintain an active member in good standing with KDA, at least through his/her 21st year.
  9. Grantee agrees to maintain an active role in KDA during the Grant period by volunteering at shows whenever possible and/or serving on KDA committees when practical or contributing articles or training/showing updates etc. to KDA eHappenings or the Impulsion newsletter. An article must be submitted at least twice per year.
  10. Grantees are allowed to apply for a second development grant no less than three (3) years after receipt of their initial grant, provided they still have (age related) eligibility for the YR/JR Championships.
  11. In any other matter of dispute or question not specifically covered, the KDA Education Committee Chairperson shall have final determination and authority, possibly with input from the full KDA Board of Directors.
