Kentucky Dressage Association Kearney Cancer 5k Run and Fun Walk Raises Almost $9,000 For Markey Cancer Center

Lexington, KY (July 26th) – The inaugural Kentucky Dressage Association 5k Kearney Cancer Run and Fun Walk held May 25th in Lexington, KY, raised $8,900 for cancer research. The money raised will be used for specific cancer research under the direction of Dr. Paul Anthony Kearney, Chief of Trauma, at the UK Medical Center.

The event, which was named after former KDA member Mary Kearney who lost her battle with brain cancer in 2009, attracted more than 180 participants and awarded $1,000 in prize money donated by Kentucky Ale, including $250, $150 and $100 in awards to the top three male and female runners. Other sponsors included The Mt. Brilliant Family Foundation, Kevin & Vicki Warren, and Jim & Michelle Morehead.

The overall male runner was Kevin Castille (time 14:28), with Patrick Cheptoek (time 14:34) and David Justus (time 14:52) placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The overall female runner was Betsy Laski (time 18:26), with Zam Zam (time 18:48) and Maddie Scheuler (time 19:47) placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The race saw more runners finishing under 15 minutes than any other race in the Lexington area so far in 2013. Photographs of the runners and event in general can be found at

“I am very please at the outcome of our inaugural race in memory of a great lady and friend Mary Kearney,” said Michelle Morehead, KDA president. “We exceeded all of our expectations and raised a record amount for a first year event. KDA hopes we can continue to host this event each year during our dressage shows at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Rolex Arena.”

The Kentucky Dressage Association May Show Experienced Record Turnout

There were a record number of entries and horses at the 2013 event

Lexington, KY (June 12th) – The Kentucky Dressage Association’s May Show had a record number of participants with more than 1,000 rides and 246 bridle numbers. The show was held May 23-26th at the Kentucky Horse Park, in Lexington, KY, and included CDI and FEI National shows classes. These classes were held in as many as five consecutive rings in both the Rolex Arena and the Dressage Complex throughout the four-day show.

Michael Barrisone won the CDI3* FEI Grand Special riding HF Victor with a score of 67.66. This was only the third time that the 11-year-old Trakehner gelding had been ridden in competition despite the pair having been partnered together for four years. Michael and Victor went on to win the Grand Prix Special with a score of 68.208. You can find a full list of the show results at

“We are delighted at the number of competitors and vendors who participated in the May shows,” said Michelle Morehead, president of the Kentucky Dressage Association. “The KDA volunteers are once again to be congratulated on their enormous effort to make our May show a premier event on the dressage riders’ calendar.”

Kentucky Dressage Association to Host Kearney Cancer 5k Run and Fun Walk

Event Named In Honor Of Former KDA Member Mary Kearney

Lexington, KY (April 30th) – An estimated 17,000 Americans are diagnosed with primary brain cancer each year. While brain tumors can develop at any age, studies show that brain cancer incidences occur most commonly in children younger than eight years old and adults over age 50.

In 2012, Kentucky Dressage Association member Mary Kearney lost her battle with brain cancer. In her memory, the Kentucky Dressage Association will be hosting a 5k and fun walk on Saturday May 25that 4.30p.m at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY to raise money for cancer research at the Markey Cancer Center.

“Dressage brought Mary and I together and her caring spirit was felt by all she met, so it seemed only fitting to hold a race in her memory at our show among so many of her friends,” said Michelle Morehead, President KDA.

In addition to the 5k and Fun Walk, a number of other family oriented events will be taking place at the park including: Stick Horse Races for the kids, a World of Breed Demonstration by the Kentucky Horse Park, and KDA Dressage Freestyle classes in the Rolex Arena.

Kentucky Ale is sponsoring the event and will award $250, $150 and $100 in prize money to the top three male and female runners. Other sponsors include The Mt. Brilliant Family Foundation, Kevin & Vicki Warren, and Jim & Michelle Morehead.

All pre-registered 5k and Fun Walk participants will receive a t-shirt on the day, featuring the logo for the event. Early registration is $25 per run/walker and ends May 13th. Late registrants are not guaranteed a t-shirt at the race. To register, please visit

KDA is hoping this will become an annual event on the Lexington calendar. If you are interested in assisting before or during the event or have questions, please contact Michelle Morehead at

“This is a fabulous opportunity to explore the Kentucky Horse Park, home of the 2010 World Equestrian Games,” said Morehead. “The park is normally limited to runners but they have very generously agreed to be the venue for the event in aid of such a great cause.”
